THE SKATALITES "From Paris With Love" World Village Records
Before reggae was reggae, ska ruled Jamaica. On the Skatalites new record, "From Paris With Love," the renowned exponents of island culture bow to no contemporary styles but instead offer their horn-powered sound for a record that's nearly all instrumentals. It is pure and very old-fashioned.
Unlike some of the band's bootleg recordings, this disc was recorded in a Paris studio. To say the sound is crisp is an understatement.
Not only is it easy to listen to, it's the kind of record that would entice anyone with an interest in how music evolves. If you dig reggae and have a little spare cash, this is how it all began.
