The Skatalites "From Paris With Love" World Village
The granddaddies of ska, first formed in 1964, are back on the road with five of the band's original members and one of their finest recordings in a decade.
The beauty of the original Skatalites was their ability to incorporate every groove, from reggae, to jazz, to calypso, into one groove. Their longevity, however, has also worked against them during the last few years, robbing some of that raw, spontaneous creativity that made them so influential.
"From Paris With Love" was recorded live in the studio during a single 16-hour run, recaptures that huge, swinging groove of their glory days.
Lloyd Knibb and Lloyd Brevett are here, along with veteran horn players Lester Sterling, Johnny Moore and vocalist Doreen Schaeffer.
As always, the Skatalites shake up it with tongues firmly in cheek on songs like "From Russia With Love," "Guns of Navarone," "Garden of Love" and "Trip to Mars." Schaeffer is fantastic, her voice now mature and oozing soul on "When I Fall In Love."
