If you were at Stern Grove last year when Les Yeux Noirs made a big splash, or later at its acclaimed Ashkenaz appearance, you'll want to get yourself down to Ashkenaz tonight for the Yiddish/Roma band's opening of the center's World Music Lecture and Concert Series.
The wild Paris-based Roma-klezmer-jazz dance band - whose name means The Black Eyes - has been featured at festivals far and wide.  Virtuoso violinist brother Eric and Olivier Slabiak led the group in its high-energy dance music.
They will be joined by Professor Martin Schwartz, international lecturer on Jewish and Greek music, discussing the multiple doundations of their style, rooted in traditional Roma (gypsy) and Yiddish music of Romania, Hungary, Russia, and Armenia.  The octet will demonstrate its instruments and show how the music is put together.
The Program begins at 8 p.m. with a dance concert following at 9:30 p.m.
"TapRoots & New Growth: Cultivating World Music," will feature ensembles from different wrold cultures over the next several months, each offering a regular concert, and a lecture-demonstration in which the artists explain their music, where it came from, how it has evolved, and what instruments and dances go with it.
Tickets are $5 for the lecture/demonstration, or $15 if you also attend the concert.  Ashkenaz is at 1317 SanPablo Ave. at Gilman Street, Berkeley.  Call 510-525-5054 or visit the Web site : http://www.ashkenaz.com 07/16/04
