SOLOMON & SOCALLED
HipHopKhasene (Piranha)
One need look no further than Rusell Simmons and the Beasty Boys to know that hip hop is as much a Jewish thing as a black thing. So, Solomon and Socalled's marriage of beats, samples, mics and fiddles on ³HipHopKhasene is no stretch of cultural propriety. And anyway, traditions schmaditions, this is a wacky (not wack) take on a traditional Jewish wedding with influences ranging from klezmer, the Lower East Side, Ninjatune¹s Coldcut and plain old chutzpah. Followers of klezmer know of this project's protaganists: Sophie Solomon, a leading violinist and founder of Oi-Va-Voi, DJ So Called, the Canadian DJ and hip-hop producer and virtuoso clarinetest David Krakauer masterminding the project. So, what¹s talent like this goofing off on a project like HipHopKhasene? Well, having fun with one's culture is a worthy pursuit and, hey, it breaks down barriers. Of course, the bling bling ain¹t so blinging here, it¹s strictly tongue-in-chic but hip hop does need a new direction. Amongst the craziness of it all is some impeccible musicianship, dope beats and even the rhymes got some flavor, albeit a kosher one. Hiphopkele is about a crazy as it can get with its Yiddish rap and clever klezmer antics. And traditionalists might even be pleased by the inclusion of Solomon-interpreted songs like Dobriden, Electro Taxim and Zay Gezunt. (JC Tripp)
