Okay, so I know what you’re thinking, “Jews doing hip-hop?” I thought the same thing. But if Eminem is the number one rapper these days, is Jewish hip-hop really so surprising? And isn’t one of the Beastie Boys Jewish? This duo are no strangers to the music world and have attempted to make traditional Jewish wedding songs (“Sure it’s a fucked up institution, economic solution to a socialised absolution”) with a little help from Michael Alpert, Smadj, Frank London and others. What results is a fun party album, maybe to be played at the reception, which puts a modern twist into an antiquated ritual. Change is good, and this kind of change is better. There’s nothing really fancy going on in this record, and it’s certainly not what comes to mind when one typically thinks of hip-hop, but Solomon & Socalled have really added to a genre that’s pretty hard to come by.
