Soloman & Socalled
"A fresh interpretation of the traditional Ashkenazi wedding suite using the language and tools of hip hop," as HipHopKhasene (premiering tonight) is billed, sounds like a wacky if not entirely palatable idea. Thing is, on the CD, you mainly hear klezmer tools. (And live, David Krakauer will play clarinet.) But then there's a little turntable scratch, or an opera sample reminds you of Malcolm McLaren, or MC Dick Van Myke stiffly attempts to rap. Cute, but next time they ought to hire Paul Barman.
