The Klezmatics Rise Up! Shteyt Oyf!

Since 1986, the Klezmatics have goosed their New York City and far surrounds with feisty takes on traditional klezmer music.  Songs about ska and marijuana use are not unusual fare for the group.  Rise Up! Shteyt Oyf! is their latest release of Hebrew excitement, and does not disappoint.  This round, the beloved "Possessed Jews With Horns" plumb the auricular archives and get serious in spots.  The CD title references Holly Near's liberating "I Ain't Afraid," which the Klez's cover in both Yiddish and English and have incorporated into their repertoire since 9/11.  Jewish partisan and poet Shmerke Kaczerginsky, who rescued 8000 archives from the Nazis, speaks on "Barikadn," a Bund youth worker song from the 20s.  Shtetl party music and the group's activism can and do get along --with Rise Up! Shteyt Oyf! you can whoop it up with a good mind.  08/01/03
