From the point of Jewish person whose hometown is New York City and whose homeland and people struggle with oppression from both ends the years since Klezmatics’ last release (1999’s ‘The Well’ with Chava Alberstein) have not been without their poignant moments. Has this got our heroes down? Well, yes, actually. But the indefatigable Klezzies pick themselves up, dust themselves down and come back with Rise Up!. It’s a call for peace-loving people from whichever background, race, religion to rally together and stand up against oppressors large & small who use people’s beliefs and territorial natures to propel their self-serving aims. ‘Rise Up!’ has a more melancholic feel compared to its predecessors and the mood is summed-up in the song which arose from the World Trade Center attack of September 11th 2001 – ‘I ain’t afraid’ – a shambling klezmer-meets-New Orleans jazz-meets-gospel number which appears in the soundclip below. As ever the sextet centred around Lorin Sklamberg and Frank London, with Lisa Gutkin replacing Alicia Svigals on violin, get the message of urban Jews out across the world in an effective and affecting way.
