The Jewish Week, CD review >>
The best and the brightest at the top of their form. This is the first ’Matics album without an outside collaborator in five years, and it was well worth the wait (not that there was anything wrong with the collaborations). The band pushes out in all directions, adding more spice to its jazz-inflected mix on tunes like “Katz und moyz,” throwing in some very adroit tsimbl-playing by Paul Morrissett on a couple of surprisingly traditional numbers and generally tearing the roof off the joint. Don’t know if Lisa Gutkin is replacing Alicia Svigals on fiddle permanently, but they’re both terrific players, so it’s not a step down. 09/13/02 >> go there
