Montreal Gazette, CD Review >>
Cape Verdean composer and singer Sara Tavares has created an album of lullabies to soothe recurring ache of rootlessness. Her generation living away from the Cape is stuck with "a kind of messed up identity," she says. Now of Lisbon, Tavares understands that reality. Her sweet voice meets acoustic guitar on ballads spotted with the slang and the rhythm of a diaspora - Cape Verdean, Angolan, Portuguese. But home is where the love is,Tavares sings. On Planeta Sukri (Sugar Planet), there are no cries, no sadness, joyous Afro-beat overrides the melancholy in many tracks. Balance is about catching the moment. 05/18/06
