There’s more to the music of Lisbon than Portuguese fado. The city by the Tagus has long had strong communities of Africans and Brazilians, and their musical influences, as well as, yes, a touch of fado—ripple through the songs of Sara Tavarès. The 27-year-old singer—whose lyrics are in Portuguese, Cape Verdean Crioulu, and English—has a fabulous voice, light yet full of colour. Her latest release, Balancè, is an intelligent blend of rhythms from three continents. Its title track has a Brazilian pulse, and her hit song, “Bon Filin”, swings with a zouklike beat. Lusaphones from all parts of the diaspora should catch this rising world-music star at her Canadian debut tonight ( June 29), when Sara Tavares performs with her band at the Centennial Theatre in North Vancouver.
