BALKAN BEAT BOX
NuMed • jDub
- By Derek Beres
Tlie folk music of the Balkans has rarely received proper studio treatment. Ranging from the rampant blares of brass to the frenetic violins ofthe tatichez. Eastern Europe has long been about melodies. What it lacked was cajones, something New York-based Balkan Beat Box shows aplenty. This comes in the forms of Jamaican spliff-sized dubs, penetrative basslines and killer drum beats. Founders Oil Kaplan and Tamir Muskat, two locals experienced on the underground music scene, have reformed and remixed the Balkans in Its most interesting configuration to date. This second outing trumps the first in production, with equally credible and fun songwriting. This is true democracy In action, swallowing a cornucopia of Influence and spitting back some rooster-crowing, Israeli emcee-slinging treasures. 06/01/07
