Minneapolis Star Tribune, Pop Spotlight: Seu Jorge >>
By Tom Surowicz
TONIGHT: Direct from the slums of Rio de Janeiro, this talented singer and songwriter was a surprise hit on the soundtrack of the film "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou," doing spare neo-bossa versions of David Bowie songs ("Rebel Rebel,"Life On Mars?" etc.). Before that, Jorge had a role in another successful flick, "City Of God," playing the part of Knockout Ned. Now he is touring America in support of his new release of mostly original songs, "Cru" (or "Raw"). It's a splendid showcase for his slightly rough yet warm voice, groovy understated guitar, and intimate, modern spin on samba traditions. (8 p.m. today, Cedar Cultural Center, 416 Cedar Av. S., Mpls. $20. 612-338-2674.) 09/16/05 >> go there
