Divided his time between Quebec and Turkey, spike-haired Mercan Dede (the name means 'coral') is deeply influenced by the sufi tradition. In fact his live shows include sufi dancers - whirling dervishes. He plays that quintessential sufi intstrument the nay (reef flute), but he also provides percussion and various forms of electronica to combine traditional acoustic counds with eleictronic dance. He calls himself 'a dervish for the modern world' and has a second life as techno DJ Arkin Alan. In September he'll be playing in Austria and the Czech Republic. 09/05/05
