Aug. 17 at 3: One of the most successful dance bands to emerge during the early years of Guinea’s independence, Bembeya Jazz started reworking traditional rhythms with Western horns and guitars back in 1961. Following the death of the band’s creative director, Acoubacar Dembar Camara, in 1973, and Guinea’s declining economic fortunes during the eighties, the band dissolved a little more than a decade ago. But under the leadership of the guitarist Sekou (Diamond Fingers) Diabaté, the Afro-pop ambassadors recently reunited for their first record in fourteen years. 08/18/03
