Bembaya Jazz broadcast on Andy Kershaw 22nd November 10:15pm.
OLIVER MTUKUDZI & Black Spirits + BEMBEYA JAZZ
Royal Festival Hall

• Oliver is the oldest of seven children.

•  Oliver has recorded over 40 original albums.

•  His fans affectionately refer to him as Tuku.

With his soul-inflected style, singer, songwriter, guitarist Oliver Mtukudzi is one of Zimbabwe's musical founding fathers and artist of global stature. His music has always articulated the struggles facing his country, not shying away from confronting a range of social issues, saying it's his message, not the beat, that sells the songs. Claiming no overriding stylistic model, Mtukudzi believes in the interrelatedness of all African music, "from Cape to Cairo". Though it includes elements of Shona and other Zimbabwean traditional music, Mtukudzi's sound also draws heavily on Southern African township pop and classic R&B. Just the same, Oliver's winning personality pervades his sound, rendering the 'Tuku' style instantly recognizable. "The sheer quality of the songs and their range of pace opens up a new dimension and go straight to the feet", BBC Music.

Bembeya Jazz are living legends of African music. Formed in 1961, they mixed popular Cuban and Congolese rhumba with Guinean traditional styles. Guitarists echoed the fluid melodies of the kora, horn sections harmonised ancient airs, singers affected the vocal dynamics of the griots to produce a cracking dance sound called Manding Swing. Becoming one of the first African supergroups, this will be their first UK gig for decades. Like fellow veterans Buena Vista Social Club and Orchestra Boabab, Bembeya Jazz have shown that music improves with keeping.
