Bembaya Jazz
You could read lots of books to learn about world rhythms, and there are certainly plenty of recordings that can serve as primers. But this summer, one of the most vivid lessons on he elasticity (and interconnectedness) of African and Cuban music has been the Kimmel Center's Perelyman Theater July "dance party" series, which will conclude Wednesday with the legendary \Guinean band Bembeya Jazz. Like Baobab, Bembeya Jazz recently reunited after a long absence; Bembeya, its first album in 15 years, bolster the groups formidable rhythm section with agitated, well-used horns and the eternally shimmering guitar of Sekou Diabete. Were Baobab rolls easily, Bembeya represents a more assertive rhythmic idea- one that's equally informed by modern West African pop and ancient traditions.
