Rooted in the exuberant national pride of fresh independence, Bembeya Jazz took their name &om a river in their homeland of Guinea. The bard formed in 1961. It became the country's National Orchestra by 1966 but was not allowed to tour outside Guinea until the mid-'BOs. Along with a spirited horn section, warm vocal harmonies and powerful, heart- pounding rhythms, Bembeya Jazz boasts the sparkling guitar work of Sekou Bembeya Diabete, known as "Diamond Fingers." The members disbanded in 1991 but regrouped to release 2001 's "Bembeya," their fIrst recording in 14 years. Bembeya Jazz comes to the American Theatre in Hampton tonight at 8.
