Orange County Register, 5,072 plan to take over low-population state >>

The Buzz will continue to be your sanctuary from the unrelenting cascade of recall news, as we go boldly forward clinging to the belief that there are other political items of interest.

For instance, if you're among those who would prefer a state with a completely revamped governmental system – a small government with limited taxes, an end to federal mandates and a restoration of constitutional federalism, the Buzz has something far better for you than the recall.

It's The Free State Project (www.freestateproject.org).

The group is in the process of signing up 20,000 collaborators, who would then move to an agreed-upon small state and use their electoral power to take over the government. Under consideration are the 10 states – ranging from Alaska to South Dakota to New Hampshire – with fewer than 1.5 million people.

As of last week, 5,072 people had signed up.

One of the county's hottest Assembly races next year is expected as Republicans Mimi Walters, Tom Wilson and Jim Gibson face off to replace Pat Bates, R-Laguna Niguel, who is termed out. The coastal district extends into San Diego County.

Laguna Niguel Councilwoman Walters is off to the fastest start with fund raising, having brought in $147,474 by June 30, end of the most-recent filing period. She added $100,000 in loans to her campaign.

County Supervisor Wilson raised $123,223 and added $12,800 in loans, boasting that because of his late entry into the race, the money was raised in a little more than a month. Vista Unified School District trustee Gibson raised $15,798 and kicked in $122,198 in loans.

It will be no surprise to loyal readers the type of music popular at the Buzz – political music, of course. The Buzz bunker has been gleefully throbbing this summer with Drop the Debt, a world-music benefit compilation CD aimed at eliminating Third World debt to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

The infectious disc includes legendary vocalist Cesaria Evora of Cape Verde, the reggae of the Ivory Coast's Tiken Jah Fakoly, the samba of Brazil's Chico Cesar and the Afro-pop of Zimbabwe's Oliver Mtukudzi, plus a dozen others. If all politics were as groovy as this, California's recall would be filling the streets with a statewide dance party.
