The Beat, Where your Roots At, Mon? >>
[Excerpt]
Another pan-global package, with a message, Drop the Debt (World Village). The idea is to cancel the huge and unfair "loans" of "aid" given by rich nations and multinational banks, so as to allow developing nations to, well, develop. The music here is diverse and comes from around the world, with a focus on Africa and South America. Producers for the French African label Lusafrica pulled together 100 artists, who contributed new and redone material for this entirely new slate of songs. Sally Nyolo, Oliver Mtukudzi, El Hadj N'Diaye, Cesaria Evora, Toto La Momposina,Chico Cesar, Soledad Bravo are among the artists; as Cesar sings, "You only gave me ten, and you want a hundred back." A very fine collection for a worthy cause. 09/01/03
