Global Rythm, CD Review >>

There's no beating great music in support of a worthy cause. The cause in question is releasing developing nations from having to pay pack IMF or World Bank loans that were often squandered by corrupt or despotic governments.  This resulted in inflated interest rates with many countries denying citizens basic needs in order to satisfy powerful and seemingly vindictive creditors.  It's a complex issue, but the music on Drop The Dept is eloquently direct in reiterating the title's plea.  The lion's share was recorded specifically for this compilation, and the combination of artist is potent.  Kicking of with Afro-Brazilian reggae courtesy of Tiken Jah Fakoly and Tribo de Jah, the unifying conviction also infuses Massilia Sound System's sassy Euro hip-hop Tota la Momposina's Columbian roots and an abundance of gorgeous acoustic offerings from greats like Oliver Mtukudzi and Teofilo Chantre in Tandem with Cesaria Evora.  Alternately serious and celebratory, this is a top compilation even without the cause.    04/01/04
