For centuries there have been annual gatherings of nomadic people in the desert of Northeastern Mali/Western Niger. This tradition was reborn in 2001 with the Festival in the Desert, a free musical celebration sponsored by the French band Lo'Jo. In 2003 the government of Mali supplied financial support, inviting musicians from all over Africa, Europe and the United States to perform. For positive proof that music is the universal language, listen to the crowd responding to the rhythms of Takamba Super Onze, a group of traditional nomadic musicians, Blackfire a Native American rock band from Arizona that mixes pow wow singing with electric guitars, the incredible vocal pyrotechnics of Malian dive Oumo Sangaré and Robert Plant¹s melody of Arthur "Big Boy" Cruddup hits including "If I Ever Get Lucky" and "That¹s Alright Mama" backed by Lo'Jo and guitarist Justin Adams, often called the British Ry Cooder because of his inter-cultural musical approach.
