The Beat, Where Ya Roots At, Mon? >>
[Excerpt]
Speaking of the Sahara, the unique musical gathering there is now sonically chronicled on Festival in the Desert (World Village), featuring acts from Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Europe-Robert Plant doing desert blues with the talented Justin Adams and French group Lo'Jo, who do their own thing too-and even an Arizonan Native American group fitting right in, It's a fascinating package and survey of North/West African music, mostly unplugged and here captured at home, as it were. Ali Farka Toure and Oumou Sangare are the more widely traveled stars here and anyone who likes their haunting music will enjoy this Saharan version of Woodstock, a seemingly unlikely triumph over natural and tribal obstacles. Highly recommended. 09/01/03
