Festival in the Desert is a collection of live recordings from what must have been an inimitable event.  For three days in the remote Malian village of Essakene, many of the region’s top musicians performed alongside some renowned visitors (including Robert Plant).  Such legends as Ali Farka Touré appear as well as such younger stars as Oumou Sangaré.  But the musicians who deliver the most inspired performances are not yet as well known.  Sedoum Ehl Aїda, credited as the first traditional electric guitarist in Mauritania, burns throughout “Ya Moulana.” 06/01/04
