Cabaret is the New Punk

Think about it, a fledgling movement bucking the trend of the corporate establishment (in this case, Warped Tour corporate nation) that incorporates “weird” attire and sexual ambiguity, that lets women play, and that harkens back to the raw emotion and sexuality of music of decades past. Well, at least that's my little theory; in any case, the “Raw Bar” monthly series at Jacque's that kicks off this week should be in turns a musical extravaganza, a fun night out with a strange rotating coterie of special guests, and a fascinating examination and recreation of a truly decadent time and place. The series is the brainchild of, and is being MC'ed by, Leah Callahan, whose career fronting such Boston luminaries as Turkish Delight, Betwixt, and most recently Butterfield 8 always betrayed, beyond the art-damaged howl of the music of those groups, a theatrical sensibility that was at once refined and unhinged. Look for a set tonight of her new cabaret-damaged solo material, along with Brian King, Sukey Tawdry, and other special guests.

Friday, September 12, 9pm/21+/$8. Jacque's Underground, downstairs at 79
