LEAH CALLAHAN
Even Sleepers
(Baraca)

Quirky cabaret pop with a dark heart and a short attention span
Callahan has lent her versatile pipes to several avant-garde pop projects over the years, and her solo debut is as odd as you'd expect. Her slightly bemused vocals and the quirky arrangements by Shaun Wortis create an eerie atmosphere. "Valentine" is an ambivalent love song set to a spooky tango beat; "Red Eye" limps along on a skewed rhythm to tell the tale of a child dealing with her alcoholic parents; "Strip Mall" is an a cappella snapshot of an agoraphobic peeking out of her bedroom window. The only quibble is the disc's miserly 22 minute duration. (j. poet) 11/01/03
