Okay I doubted the label of “hardcore folk”. I mean seriously, how on earth could you combine hardcore and folk in the same sentence? But I digress because I was amazed to discover that indeed I was wrong. This might be the only band of its kind but the six instrumentalists known as Warsaw Village Band is indeed hardcore folk. Employing a type of singing style known as “bialy glos” or “white voice”, which was a type of screaming that is in the tradition of Polish shepherds. In addition to that unique brand of vocals, they also play a Polish fiddle from the 16th century called Suka, which is primarily played with the fingernails. “Chassidic Dance” is a traditional dance and is expressive of the mixture of Polish and Jewish cultures and is similar to Dervish and Sufi dances done to celebrate God and Creation. Lyrically they sing of feminism and socio-political themes with protest songs and trance-inducing folk rhythms.
