Warsaw Village Band emerged in 1997 as a six-member group in the Polish folk music scene. Because of their combination of traditional folk music, modern recording techniques, and punk influence they are known for their "hard-core" folk.
The band travels all over Poland searching out older singers and players that still know the traditional music from before the Communists politicized the folk culture and the later influence of Westernization. They jumped a generation to combine those traditional roots and instruments with a modern recording techniques. They use a vocal style called white voice, a traditional style of powerful but melodic screaming that evolved as a way to communicate over long distances. When combined with studio effects the result can be entrancing. Their instrumentation consists primarily of traditional instruments such as fiddle and bass, dulcimer and lots of drumming. The lyrics of these songs cover a range of subjects including weddings, lost love, yearning, social protest and a call for disobedience and independence. The usual subjects of folk music. The CD also includes two interesting remix tracks.
This is a great introduction to both Polish traditional folk music and the bold modern treatment given to it by this wonderful young band. This is beautiful, emotionally rich music performed with the energy of a punk band. Quite a mix and quite enjoyable.
