Picture seven sprightly youths in a herd of sheep on a hillside meadow in Poland. Now picture them slam-dancing. This is the spirit of the Warsaw Village Band - taking tunes from the Polish countryside and adding their own punk-inspired flair. The result? They call it "hardcore folk." The troupe plays wedding songs and Polka music with an aggressive, reverbified, percussion-heavy twist. The singing style is a punked-up adaptation of traditional sheperds' screams! They've also added a protest-rock message, rebelling against marriage and urging the country's youth to be nobody's servant." Check how cool their instruments are: a suka, a hundred-year-old Polish dulcimer, and a hurdy-gurdy! 06/17/04
