Alarm Press, CD Review >>

As resident Polish person on the Alarm staff, I had the pleasure of evaluating the merit of Warsaw Village Band’s latest release, People’s Spring. The verdict: it’s good. Really good. Their method of combining Old World style with a contemporary youthfulness and vitality is seamless and impressive – a feat that would have people in my parents’ generation green with envy. The music, simultaneously heavy and mysterious, yet fast and playful, is executed with a passion and a skill that could only come from calling upon the spirit of Poland past. Warsaw Village Band’s take on the folk music native to the fields, villages, and mountains of its home country is certainly a powerful one; amazing vocals, unique instruments, and ambitious as hell. The only questionable part is the pair remixes at the end that begins to whisper overkill – their music is saturated enough without the additional electronic instruments and synthesized beats. Overall, however, the 15 song release is fast, slow, happy and depressing all at once. Halfway through you’ll be wondering whether you should be spinning around the room and stomping your feet to the music or curled up in the corner on the verge of tears.
