Setting about to create some of the most deep bass and low end sounds ever felt by man, Ex-Centric Sound System’s “West Nile Funk” is a blending of drum&bass and electronic music with traditional African sounds. Yossi Fine, former bassist for David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Me’Shell Ndegocello produces some of the most wicked bass lines that guide the wild percussion through African-ized folk tunes. Along with Fine is a Moroccan-Israeli drummer Michael Avgil, and traditional Ghanaian musician/dancers Prince Nana Dadzie and Miss Adevo who only amp the energy up to a threshold many humans won’t be able to deal with. “The Original Ragga” could dominate clubs or campfire with its bouncy rhythm and stabs and one would be surprised to find out that it’s a Hutu wedding song. “Ebae” with its Hebrew vocals talks of the experience of being a Ghanaian living in Israel. The party calling comes in the form of “Bring Your Calabash”; a calabash is a gourd used not just for eating but also for percussion. Certainly the sounds of West Africa are employed here but as Fine says even the Americas and Caribbean traditions are explored. Groundbreaking and accessible, this is club-friendly Afro-beat at its very best.
