For today's global hit, The World's Adeline Sire introduces us to a group that takes a global approach to dance-floor music.
The group "Ex-Centric Sound System" has just released its second album. It's called "West Nile Funk." That's because the musical ideas for the CD come from anywhere west of the Nile river. From West Africa, to the Caribbean to North America. The group members combine modern funk and hip-hop with traditional ethnic music. This track called "the original ragga" includes a Hutu wedding song.
Ex-Centric Sound System was founded by Israeli bass player Yossi Fine. His band includes musicians from all over Africa. Yossi Fine wanted lots of bass on this album. He got the idea at carnival celebrations in Trinidad. That's where trucks carrying giant speakers shake the air with bass, the kind that makes your ribcage vibrate.
In fact, band leader Yossi Fine recommends that listeners play his music loud in their cars and watch their mirrors bounce.
Yossi Fine was born in Paris to an Israeli guitarist and a West indian singer. He says he wants his album to pioneer a new sound for the future. One that creates a rich groove from eclectic elements. The album "West Nile Funk" was recorded in Israel, Jamaica, Ghana and New York.
