Reno Gazette-Journal, CD Review >>

West of the Nile, when someone plugs in big-bass speakers on the back of a truck, dancers gather like kids at an ice-cream truck. The sound system is a fixture in Africa and the Caribbean that epitomizes the vibe that the Israeli-Ghanian members of Ex-Centric Sound System seek to recreate and one-up with their new disc. This is a collection of drum and bass meant to be played loud and to rattle ribcages. As such, this CD might not appeal to those hankering for melody or harmony. But you won’t go wrong here if you want to swim in a soup of thoroughly groovy bass and dub along with traditional African rhythms, instruments, songs and chants. The music ranges from the gritty “The Original Ragga” and “Alice in Voodooland,” to the ambient “West Nile Funk” and “Ayoyo.” There are moments that sound a bit too much like club mixes, but even there the beats are above reproach and the funky surprises are myriad.
