At its best, Ex-Centric Sound System aspires to the dub psychedelia of African Headcharge or of Brian Eno and David Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts . But too often the hyper clubby beats interfere with the more sedate heart of the music, evoking comparisons to Deep Forest. A fantastic track of singing from Burundi gets buried underneath the band. But the high-life inspired "Bring Your Calabash" invites a sing-along. In aiming to transmute the whole scope of musical sources "West of the Nile," ESS casts its net too wide. To be fair, ESS hopes to recapture the thrill of the throbbing sound systems used throughout the Caribbean, and a loud party is required to test that theory. -- John Adamian  08/05/04
