Murder Dog, CD Review >>

This CD is the sucessful result of musical exploration that crosses boundaries and catagories in a rewarding and inventive manner.  The music combines a heady mix of Latin (Puerto Rican, Cuban) rhythms with a dash of heavy metal and jazzy horns playing fresh and novel lines and harmonies, but the icing on the cake is the (often zany) vocalization of the leader, Aib Gomez.  Zemog, the name of the group is, of course, Gomez spelled backwards.  This "post-salsa" music is quirky, rootsy, enjoyable, and with just the right touch of avante-garde.  Aib Gomez grew up in rural Puerto Rico and is part Peruvian also.  He now lives in the Boston area.  The other musicians on the CD all hail from Boston's jazz and avante-garde scenes.  I was pleasantly surprised by the unique blends coming from the horns, especially.  The vocals entertain in a raw, loose, yet effective manner.  Most of all, the CD is just plain fun to listen to.  The musicians aren't afraid to take a few chances and have a good time.  Beats are an eclectic mix of rumba, mozambique, rock, mambo, and more.  The music has been variously influenced by everything from Ornette Coleman to Metallica to Puerto Rican brass band.  This is also the perfect "party" CD, so don't miss it, it will lift your spirits!  - Root Doctor 01/01/03
