The Pit Report, concert review of Jayuya (predecesor of Zemog, El Gallo Bueno) >>

Taking the stage with enthusiastic cries of ‘Jayoooooooooooooooo-yah’ on the parts of both the band and the fans, Jayuya set the perfect tone for this hot and sweaty night—hyper, happy, and hilarious. Starting things off with some of the most vulgar saxophone bleats you could ever hope to hear and sounding more than a little like the mutant Latin child of Morphine and whomever the hell it was that composed the music that Ed Wood used in his movies they grabbed us fast and never let us go. After a few tunes the saxophonist, who is also the singer, put his horn away and moved back to the conga drums where he managed to be even more entertaining, with much lugubrious eye rolling, arm waving, and admonitions to the audience to guess the meaning of the cryptic symbol drawn at the base of his throat (an electron). Combine this with their (ahem) flair for fashion (bright yellow parachute pants made of... Duct tape?) and you have a band that the two of us will definitely make an effort to go see; fans of Latin music are especially advised to correr, no caminar, to their next gig, which we hope is very soon.
