Zemog, El Gallo Bueno, "Zemog, El Gallo Bueno" (Aagoo)
Imagine Sun Ra -- or, for that matter, Groucho Marx -- returned to Earth to lead a 10-piece salsa combo. Not the crisp precision of the traditional genre, but a loosey-goosey vibe with dashes of reggae, New Orleans second-line rhythms, surf guitar, goofy Spanish vocals and whimsical chants.
The Puerto Rican-blooded Boston-based Aib Gomez is rooted in his Latin heritage but gleefully pulls and stretches the sound into unexpected shapes, aided considerably by his three infectious percussionists and the wild jazz chops of cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and baritone saxist Timo Shanko. Appropriately recorded in garage-a-rama sound. Grade: B+ (Martin Wisckol/The Register) 06/01/03
