[EXCERPT]
Saving the best for last, the evening closed with a performance by the new-wave salsa band Zemog El Gallo Bueno, led by the charismatic Abraham Gomez-Delgado, who bids fair to become the Screaming Jay Hawkins of the Latino music world. Zemog renders the familiar salsa beat through a bizarre filter of rock-and-roll and Mozartian counterpoint as Gomez-Delgado struts the stage with unabashed verve, encouraging members of the nine-piece band to throw musical challenges in each other's way. This combination of showmanship and open-ended musical celebration gathered the pleasures of the program in a nutshell. All the night lacked was a new-wave Don Kirshner to hustle the acts on and off the Great Hall stage. Which, really, is all new music like this needs to enter the wider cultural sphere. 11/02/03 >> go there
