Back in the 90’s when Abraham Gomez-Delgado’s band Juyuya executed a pretty damn hot mambo version of Van Halen’s “Janie’s Cryin” for a CherryDisc compilation, it was already apparent that the man had an idiosyncratic conception of Latin pop brewing in his noggin. But his latest group Zemog el Gallo Bueno, are even farther afield: already heralded by New York Times, they’ve been described as a “post-salsa big band,” with Gomez-Delgado citing influences from Metallica and Kraftwerk to avant-garde jazz. On disc, the line-up has included Balaton’s Giancarlo Buscaglia and Luis Blanco and the Fully Celebrated Orchestra’s Timo Shanko and Taylor Ho-Bynum. Now Gomez-Delgado brings the full Zemog treatment to Zuzu. 01/23/04
