ISSA BAGAYOGO Tassoumakan (Six Degrees)
Bagayogo’s globally acclaimed “Timbuktu” was one of this page’s top picks for 2002’s best albums. The recently released “Tassoumakan” (“Voice of Fire”) mines the same fields of Malian folk, talking blues and electronica without, thankfully, getting trapped in a rut. If anything, dance-floor habitués can exult in even deeper grooves and insistent beats on tracks like “N’Deri,” “Koroto” and “Chauffeur,” while the female answering choruses and frequently utilized n’goni (six-stringed traditional lute) craft the mesmerizing impression that Bagayogo’s singing from some long-past point in time. www.sixdegreesrecords.com 09/09/04
