Issa Bagayogo, “Tassoumakan” (Six Degrees)

When Bagayogo burst upon the global music scene with 2002’s “Timbuktu,” critics and aficionados took note.  Here was a guy who seamlessly blended traditional, Malian roots music with computer-generated techno beats.  The rousingly original collection spawned many imitators.

Now he’s back with “Tassoumakan,” which means “voice of fire.”  It’s not quite as strong and fresh as “Timbuktu,” but it’s still got some interesting tracks.  “Koroto” moves with a confident dance beat as guitar, bass and programming mesh with n’goni (lute) and balafon (xylophone).

“Kanou” is chilled out and reflective, while “Kalan Nege” and “Touba” pick up the fusion mantle once again.

Bagayogo’s male-female call-and-response vocals speak of previous generations.  But occasionally, the vocals and instrumentals get repetitive.  “Tassoumakan” is a worthy listen, but not as fiery as one might be led to believe.
