World music’s Issa Bagayogo blends traditional sounds of Mali and Wassoulou folk with downtempo techno beats for a truly unique result. The album means “Voice of Fire”, and indeed his tongue is flammable and exhumes the spirit of forgotten Manding emperors and perhaps that’s due to his recording sessions in the capital city Bamako of Mali. One will instantly appreciate the n’goni, a lute that Issa has played since he was a child. Truly an album that will appeal to NPR listeners, dub fanatics, and world music addicts, “Tassoumakan” sets itself apart from all the Afro-pop that dominates the world music charts. 07/14/04 >> go there
