Madagascar's Jaojoby cites James Brown as his primary
influence, and with good reason. The king of his island
nation's salegy music, he is a vocal powerhouse, also
indebted to the blues shouters who preceded Brown.
"Malagasy" is a gripping example of the hypnotic appeal of
salegy, in which vocals soar above a high-decibel, electric
guitar-dominated sound (with sprinklings of atmospheric
accordion), strung out over complex but irresistibly
body-moving 6/8 rhythms. Jaojoby's family band (with his
wife, son and two daughters) performs at the Skirball Center
on Aug. 12. 08/01/04
