Music from Madagascar will fill Oats Park next Saturday night, the 14th, when the group, Jaojoby, the most popular ensemble there and throughout the Indian Ocean islands will perform a free concert.  While the music is rooted in the island’s traditions, Jaojoby has electrified it so that the group is on a par with the best rock, funk and jazz bands in the western world.  His voice has been likened to soul music giants such as James Brown and Otis Redding and his albums are hugely successful.  Two recent releases showcase his interpretations of the musical style known as salegyAza Arianao (Indigo/Discorama) was released in 2001 and made the group’s musical stylings a huge hit in Europe.  Their just released CD, Malagasy (Discorama/World Village) was hailed by Jon Pareles in last Sunday’s New York Times as being “light, springy and as close as music gets to pure joy.”  So, bring a picnic supper, blankets or lawn chairs and don’t miss the chance to see the group live, and for free, right here in Fallon.  Jaojoby will perform at 7:30, August 14th, in Oats Park.  For more information, please call the Churchill Arts Council at 423-1440.
