Cuba's Yusa is perhaps one of the premier artists in the entire world. Her self-titled CD is absolutely phenomenal. Yusa is a very able musician and really shows it on songs like the opening track "Tomando El Centro". Musically this album stops in a few places that are perhaps related stylistically. Elements of flamenco, jazz, folk, lounge, and worldbeat can all be found here. I'm not certain, but I think I may even hear some Tower of Power influence in the horns on this album! Throughout the CD one single element draws you in deeper and deeper with each song though and that is Yusa's voice. Yusa's voice is quite unique. It has the sultry sophistication of a lounge singer but at the same time exerts a certain rock quality that forces you to take her seriously. Songs like "Cuestion De Angulo" make you want to get out and tango even if you don't know how, while songs like "Momentos" are quieter and feel very heartfelt. This is one of those can't miss buys for fans of great music. The downside is that the album is entirely in Spanish so I have no idea what she is saying. More at www.tumimusic.com
