Billed as "living proof that not everyone in Cuba is making music like their granddaddy," the music made by the deep-voiced Yusa is indeed almost nothing at all like the sounds of those venerable members of the Buena Vista Social Club and peers. Yusa's debut is without a stitch of nostalgia as musical thread to the past. Not to say Yusa's Cuban roots, of the nueva trova tradition made famous by troubadour Pablo Milanes, don't show, it's just that they are deftly woven amongst numerous other influences, notably Brazilian music; the echoes of Lenine, Carlinhos Brown et al. will have the casual listener thinking this must be a Brazilian recording. And all of the above are heard through a jazz filter made up of one part Weather Report, one part Miles Davis, with a scrim of sophisticated pop a la Sting occasionally cast over the mix. Yusa has been nominated in the Best Newcomer category of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music, to be presented in March. This recording, despite some unevenness of vocal quality and strength of song, should put her at the front of the pack. 12/19/02
