YUSA YUSA (tumi)
Cuba, Brazil, America, it doesn't matter from where Yusa culls influence. Her debut is simply a gorgeous album - an acoustic, soft splendor escalating to ecstatic proportions. A bit of Cesaria Evora exists in her voice, though not as sad as those momas, a smidgeon of Tracy Chapman, yet more far-reaching. This young star is rising the ranks, proven by pheonomenal success at last year's WOMEX festival, and here her breakthrough fuses son, trova, and even gospel-esque pop in unrequited harmony. Few artists exist with such crossover potential to an American audience. 04/01/03
