Yusa is a singer whose influences are very different from that of most singers coming out of her native Cuba.  The music on her debut reflects modern-day, urban havana and draws as much from jazz and light rock and contemporary Brazilian musical styles as it does from nueva trova and son.  Working with a top-notch crew of musicians, including arranger Robert Carcasses and producer Pavel Urquiza, Yusa presents her original songs in an intimate but highly rhythimic setting.  The producer subtly weaves the occasional brief snippet of "found sound" into a few of the songs, adding ambience to the material.  English lyrics are included in the booklet, which should help make Yusa's songs accessible to a wider audience.  Not everything is as exciting as the scatting duet with guest vocalist Domingo Candelario on "Chiquichaca," but Yusa certainly deserves a place fairly high up in th echelon of rookie female jazz singers.
