Acoustic Brazil (Putamayo) is a single-disc, 12-song sampler of recent material highlighting predominantly samba and bossa nova songs, many of them quite lush and sentimental. Gal Costa’s “Aquele Frevo Axé” and Anna de Hollanda’s “Samba Triste” set the mood, though Caetano Veloso’s “Cajuína” and Glaucia Nasser’s “Lábios de Cetim” are sung with more fervor and also have a stronger, more rhythmically exuberant groove. Chico Buarque, Rita Ribeiro and Mônica Salmaso are other vocalists with rich, impressive technique, and the set provides a good overview of how the classic Brazilian sound gets blended with American pop, jazz, funk and soul influences by several of the featured singers.
