Putumayo World Music presents more than 100 CDs and cassettes. The new releases include Acoustic Brazil, New Orleans, Mali and Afro-Latin Party. An Italian Cafe CD is due in June.

Relevance to travelers: Music is an integral part of any culture, and Putumayo, established in 1993, focuses on the unique sounds of a city, country or region or on specific themes (as in Mali to Memphis, which traces the blues from Africa to America), You'll recognize some artists (Louis Armstrong, Dr. John and Kermit Ruffins on New Orleans) while others are newer finds. The concept goes beyond high-quality music; the newest volumes include colorful booklets (cover art by Nicola Heindl) with background on musical traditions, individual selections and performers. The New Orleans booklet also features resources for music lovers visiting the Big Easy. Some include recipes (seafood gumbo for New Orleans). These CDs, plus text, can help get you in the mood for a trip or rekindle good vibes.

Music library: Other Putumayo releases range from Celtic Tides and French Cafe to Samba Bossa Nova and Nuevo Latino. A catalog listing is at www.putumayo.com.

Cost: CDs cost $14-$16. Cassettes are about $11. . ^,
